Investing in Annuity Products

Mar 7th, 2009 Posted in Financial Planning | no comment »

I recently spoke asked my brother, who is a financial planner in Greenwich, CT, where his high net worth clients are putting most of their money these days, given that alternative investments (mostly hedge funds) have had their worst year ever and that conventional investments like stocks, bonds, and commodities haven’t fared much better, either. He told me that more and more of his clients are asking him if they can buy annuity products from him because they are interested in preserving principle and accumulating wealth slowly, without the volatility that’s inherent in riskier assets like stocks and bonds. In response to their demand, he has started selling annuity payments and has made a pretty penny doing so – in fact more than he generally makes in fees and trading commissions from his client accounts. He explained to me that annuities are a win-win for the salesperson and the customer.

The customer is usually guaranteed to receive the full amount of their principle back over the course of the annuitized payments; or at very least to receive a minimum payment that reflects some correlation to the size of the principle. More than that, however, they are often able to borrow money against future cash flows from their business in order to allow the compounding returns of the underlying annuity investments – usually principle-protected income products like bonds – to really grow their own personal wealth without all of the volatility associated with conventional securities or investment vehicles.

For him, as the guy selling annuity products, my brother has made a fortune. Since annuities are kind of like reverse insurance policies, calculated based on actuarial tables and conservative estimates of the returns on the underlying annuity investments, a profit margin is easily calculable and the seller is given a big cut of the profit as a commission. And since so many of his clients are able to leverage their principle against future business cash flows, principle amounts easily push $1m, putting his commissions well into the 5 digits for each annuity he sells.

Initially I thought there was something wrong about how much he could get paid for the sale, especially given that it is really so little work for him to sell the product. But the longer I thought about it, the more it seems like a fair exchange, just like any other insurance transaction. In return for stability, security, and yes – in the end, real, augmented wealth by way of leverage – it seems only fair that the people who buy annuity payments should pay a bit of a premium.

Compaq Processor

Mar 6th, 2009 Posted in Computers | no comment »

I was looking to buy a Compaq cpu for an affordable price. My old computer was outdated and did not have enough memory to keep up with all of my media needs. After I had bought an MP3 player I had amassed a large amount of music files. I also uploaded pictures from my digital camera and videos from my video camera. New technology had multiplied the number of applications that a computer can be used for and I wanted to take advantage of them all. I wanted a computer that could supply me with all the entertainment and organization options that were available, but still provide me with the word processing and other business programs that I had been using.

At first I looked into upgrading my current computer to see if I could save some money. In order to improve the performance of my computer, I would have to purchase an upgraded Compaq processor, upgraded storage, and upgraded memory. I needed the Compaq processor upgrade so that I could attain the best performance available for applications running on advanced operating systems. I needed to upgrade the storage for all of my files, and the upgraded memory would be used for all of the programs and applications that I used.

When I totaled up the Compaq processor upgrade component, the upgraded storage, and the upgraded memory, I would have to spend at least a few hundred dollars. This would be an expensive upgrade on an outdated computer. It made more sense to go out and purchase a new Compaq cpu. New computers are affordable and you could find excellent prices on a new Compaq cpu by doing a little comparison shopping and internet research.

I found a great deal on a new Compaq computer that comes with an abundance of internal memory and storage. I also was able to purchase a package deal with a fantastic new widescreen monitor for an unbelievable price. I hurried home to hook the computer up.

Now I can continue to expand my music library, download and edit photos from my digital camera, and download videos from my video recorder without having to worry about using up to much storage space. A computer is meant to make life easier and provide you with a number of great services. I even purchased a special program that will help me to organize and edit all of my photos and then print them out.

Success of a Highway Sign

Feb 23rd, 2009 Posted in Advertising | no comment »

I started working as a waitress at a great little diner that was located a few blocks from the major highway that intersected with our town. This diner had some of the best home-cooked food that I had ever eaten. Everything was made from scratch from the biscuits to the delicious apple pie. Customers raved about our food and how delicious it was.

Our main business was from local residents that had been coming here for years. On the weekends, we were always very busy with locals coming in for some old-fashioned comfort food. There was a steel plant across the street and down a little from the diner and we were constantly waiting on the employees from there. The steel plant had three different shifts and I got used to the regulars that would come in after their shift got out for some coffee and a bite to eat.

The diner had been operating the same way for twenty years, serving up food made with love to the locals. But then there was some bad news, the corporation that owned the steel plant decided that they needed to shut the plant down.

The week after the plant closed business was down by fifty percent. The owners of the diner said that they could only afford to continue to operate for another two months if business didn’t pick up.

We all brainstormed on ways that we could increase business. I suggested some form of advertising. After all, we had some of the best food around. All that we needed to do way to get the customers coming in and we were certain that they would be back. Another waitress came up with the idea that we should rent a billboard advertising our diner somewhere located along the highway. That way all of the motorists passing us right by would know that they were going to miss out on the best home cooked food if they didn’t stop.

The owners were leery about spending that much money on billboard advertising, but after another week of even lower sales they knew that it was their last hope. They spent the last of their money on a billboard placed right before our exit.

And now we have a line out the door of customers. Who would have ever thought that billboard advertising could save our little diner and nearly double our sales? Now we are a regular hang out for truck drivers, travelers, and the locals.

Making Your Network More Reliable

Feb 22nd, 2009 Posted in los angeles colocation | no comment »

As the owner of a 300-employee business in Santa Monica, finding a local partner to develop my business’s network was important because I knew that a Southern California-based ISP would provide me with the best service at competitive prices. I needed to find someone who could provide me first with Los Angeles colocation for our servers, to ensure that we had backup and support for our network if it were to ever crash. As a business that generates a good deal of revenues from online traffic, it’s important that we keep our site operational at all times, and the collocated host option is one that has benefited us in a few ways, which I’ll mention in a second. We also looked for a company that would bundle our colocation with a Los Angeles Wimax solution, which we learned would be far less expensive than and as reliable as a fixed-line system like DSL, cable, or fiber-optic as far as a last-mile connection is concerned.

Our partner in the project was able to provide both of these services at an outstanding value, and with the assurance of service and quality that comes with working a  small business that has its reputation at stake in the small community. The company’s Los Angeles colocation center is by far the most sophisticated I’ve seen, and I toured them all personally when deciding where our services should be kept. A smaller client list makes it easy for the network operators to allocate bandwidth as is necessary to deal with peaks and valleys in network capacity usage, and an extremely impressive streamlined network architecture makes the website and our access to our own back-end data much faster, more reliable, and more stable than it has ever been.  Network operators monitor things 24 hours a day and can identify potential problems before they bring the storefront down.

The Los Angeles Wimax solution I received was also second-to-none. While Wireless last-mile technology in an urban environment may be counterintuitive, the convenience and low cost literally made it impossible not to buy laptops for any employees who wanted them – a promise that I know is likely to pay off by making them more productive at their work.

Bottom line: when planning your network infrastructure and IT solutions, talk to a local partner who deals with lots of small businesses like yours and won’t implement a cookie-cutter corporate solution. Doing so for my business saved us a bundle and gave me the confidence that our network and infrastructure is safe with a partner who has my best interests at heart.

Tips from a broker on finding that special place to call home

Feb 21st, 2009 Posted in condos chicago illinois | no comment »

There are a number of advertising outlets for condos Chicago Illinois has on the market. Condos are listed for sale in newspapers, real estate magazines, on the internet, and also by signage. Some of these advertising methods can be more successful than others. Whether you are buying or selling condos in the Chicago area, it is important to select the right type of advertising to use.

Newspaper ads are a popular way to advertise Chicago real estate. Many of the major Chicago land newspapers have special sections devoted to advertising real estate which can be helpful for people trying to sell their property or looking to buy. Newspapers ads are organized into different sections by the type of property for sale (home, town home, or condo) and then they are separated by their location. Many people use newspaper advertising to sell properties by owner. Newspapers are limited though to the size and type of ad that you can place. Some allow space for small photos, but these are usually of poorer quality.

There are real estate magazines that list condos Chicago Illinois has available. These magazines are great tools for buyers and sellers. Since they are devoted solely to real estate, listings are much longer and more comprehensive than newspaper ads. Pictures can be in color and some advertisements allow for numerous photos.

The internet has become one of the most popular ways to search for real estate. There are web sites devoted to condos Chicago Illinois has for sale. You can search through thousands of listings in the comfort of your own home for a property that has everything that you are looking for. The internet also allows for a limitless amount of pictures that can accompany your ad. This is a great resource for both the buyer and the seller. You can showcase the most prominent areas of your condo for sale if you are a seller. If you are a buyer, you can take one look at a condo over the internet and decide whether or not it is worth it to visit it in person. Using the internet can save buyers lots of time.

Some sellers still rely upon for sale signs to sell their property. The downside of these signs is that they do not maximize the property’s exposure. A sign can only be seen by those that are driving past it, and in residential areas many of the people driving by already own properties in the area. Signs can be useful, but in order to compete in today’s market they should be used in combination with one of the advertising methods listed above.

Leave your beauty to a real artist

In the last few years, bright smiles have found their way beyond advertisements and mass media and into the lives of real people, thanks to enormous advancements in teeth whitening that make it more affordable, more easily accessible, and more effective. A Teeth whitening Smile makeover has become so in-demand that most family dentists now offer safe, effective whitening at prices even the most pressed wallet can handle. Many would-be customers are deterred from undertaking help from a professional because of the emergence of so many inexpensive do-it-yourself kits. But before anyone decides to take on teeth whitening on their own, it’s important to understand exactly what teeth whitening does.

Many patients are often curious as to the distinction between whitening and bleaching products. For instance, why doesn’t whitening toothpaste whiten teeth in lieu of a whitening product sold over-the-counter or else one that’s administered by a skilled cosmetic dentist?

Whitening toothpaste aims at removing superficial staining and discoloration from the tooth’s enamel. While this addresses one cause of tooth discoloration, the darkening of teeth is actual a semi-natural process caused by aging (it’s actually one of the things that makes people invariably look their true age) caused by the gradual darkening of the nerve belying the tooth’s enamel, surrounded by dentin. As we age, the nerve darkens and the dentin begins to absorb the darker color; translucent enamel then broadcasts that darkening. To fully whiten the tooth, the dentin must be bleached, which is where home and dentists’ office whitening treatments come into play.

Bleaching treatments from the dentist and from do-it-yourself kits access the tooth’s dentin and whiten it with a peroxide active ingredient, allowing the enamel’s white color to project the vivid whiteness of young teeth that we associate with youthful smiles. Yet effective bleaching is still best left to the professional.

Do it yourself home bleaching can often produce uneven results. What’s more, treatment by a home kit often requires a significant time commitment since the bleaching solution is more diluted, and for the slight savings these offer versus dentist teeth whitening, the often inferior results are not justified for the long time commitment. Furthermore, multiple exposures to the bleach used in home kits often leads to far greater sensitivity to hot and cold than professionally administered treatments.

For the small expense of professional teeth whitening, patients will receive a tried and true whitening solution that will take far less time and promises far more consistent results than spotty home whitening treatments.

Defenders of Freedom - Honor your duty

Don’t just wear any uniform.

Wear one that shows its colors.

You’re proud to be in the army. You should be. The history of America’s armed forces is uncompromised, proven by a valor to serve and fight for our most cherished freedoms. When you wear a formal army uniform, you are donning your best and your brightest in order to represent the elite fighting force you belong to. Whether visiting senior citizen centers, attending Mass, or speaking to a group of Boy Scouts, you wear your uniform for formal occasions as a symbol of America’s bravery in the face of tyranny.

Your uniform should have a dignified look, adorned with a selection of US Army medals that not only adds color and texture, but a feeling of dignity and respect as well. Success is in the details, signified through the varied colors of ribbons and medals that instill the sense of dignity to the uniform. When you proudly display your US Army medals, you display your gratitude to serve, your pride in representing an elite fighting force protecting this country’s sacred freedoms.

Pins in a medal vary according to where you prefer to display it. Long pins are ideal for a service coat, while shorter pins can be pinned to a shirt. Any pin, however, will cause fraying and deterioration over time, so a magnetic backing is best, attaching to the shirt without damaging the fabric.

While original military ribbons are generally heavy, ¾ of an inch thick, they were designed for display primarily on a display rack or other decorative case. As more soldiers chose to proudly display their ribbons on their formal dress uniforms, on-line companies now offer ribbons only 1/8 of an inch thick that could be applied to the fabric without weighing it down. They have the same dignified colors as the original medals, without the heavy weight that unnaturally sag a shirt.

On-line companies offer a wide selection of military medals that are sure to add dignity to any uniform. A medal is more than a sign of respect. It’s a tribute to the greater legacy of the American military, a bond that exists between soldiers who carry on the mission of defending freedom to this very day. No matter the theater, American service men and women will answer the call to defend the world from the evils of tyranny.

Something I did not know

Feb 6th, 2009 Posted in colorado high school football | no comment »

In a recent article in ESPN magazine a writer noted that the favorite sports of high school students throughout the country vary widely from state to state and suggested that the popularity of a given sport may just be a function of which professional teams in the state are most successful. A quick tally of some of each states’ best teams show that the success of professional sports teams is actually pretty well correlated to the popularity of those sports in the teams’ home states. One stellar example is Colorado.Few would argue that if there is one team that has defined Colorado’s sports history it is the Denver Broncos. The Broncos’ success with John Elway in the shotgun is practically unrivalled by any other team in any other sport at any other time. Interestingly enough, before their Denver teams’ great success, the World Series ranked above the Super Bowl among Coloradoans in terms of popular. In 2003, however, at the nadir of Denver’s success, the Super Bowl was preferred to the World Series by a margin of 2-to-1. That statistic isn’t surprising, since clearly fans would support their best team. But when you consider that the average Colorado high school football team grew by 15% over a six-year period, and that high school football teams almost outnumbered by high school baseball teams for the first time in any state’s history, it becomes hard not to believe that the success of the professional sports teams and the longer-term popularity of the sport are interconnected. Since the decline of the Broncos, football still remains the favorite sport of high school students, according to a survey done in 2008 that asked students to name their favorite sports to watch on TV and in person, regardless of which team was playing. At any given Colorado high school, football remained the sport of choice by an even larger margin than it had been during the Elway dynasty. Perhaps this phenomenon can be explained by some kind of cultural lag – dynasties casting their shadows – or is the popularity of a high school sport really just the product of chance? It is intuitive that a sport would be more popular among people if their own home team was great at it, but how long should that success inform their cultural sensibilities? Is there a multiplying effect if the team is a dynasty? To answer these questions, I have begun keeping data and taking regular surveys so that we will someday – hopefully soon – understand the mass psychology behind the popularity of sports.

Reliable Assembly Robots

Jan 27th, 2009 Posted in Assembly robots | no comment »

Assembly robots are easily the most sophisticated pieces of technology on the assembly room floor. The technology and sciences that have guided their development are no doubt complex, but they truly simplify the production process in the long run. Precise, detailed steps can be quickly and efficiently done with a consistency and quality never before seen in traditional manufacturing.

Assembly robots allow for the assembly of each product component and the final product in sequence with an unsurpassed speed, replacing manual production with quick, efficient and consistent automation. They take complicated controllers, sensors, and programming languages and orchestrate the entire process of production as smoothly as a fine tuned engine. Utilizing a powerful control unit, robotics take the best in process oriented software to completely automate every step of the assembly line, right down to quality control.

Some jobs people were simply not meant to do. Some tasks are too monotonous and redundant for a human being, inviting only error that impedes the quality of the product. In the case of the manufacture of dangerous or toxic chemicals, that kind of error can constitute a hazardous safety threat that simply isn’t worth the risk. To make sure that a job is done correctly each and every time, automation is necessary throughout the manufacturing process.

Robots can work 24-hours a day, without interruptions or a loss in quality or consistency. The consistent output combined with a repeatable quality results in a better product at a cheaper rate at a greater output. Robotics maximize a product line, in efficiency, quality, and most importantly, profit.

Assembly robots reduce dimensions and increase work volume, allowing greater production in a more confined space. Their flexibility and speed brings versatility to a manufacturing line, allowing one robot to perform a variety of jobs interchangeably.

The technology of robotics has increased to the point that complicated jobs are reduced to the touch of a button. Traditional manual manufacturing is obsolete when compared to the quality and efficiency that automation allows. This is a new age, one where monotonous jobs become the processes of machines, and their very processes, designs and nature become the new jobs of the 21st century.
