Fire Damage Cleanup Instructions

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

Dealing with the damage after a fire is something that no one who owns a home wants to have to deal with, not only since the home has been damaged, but also because the belongings inside it have been damaged, as well.  Repairing the damage can be done either by a professional or by you, depending on the funds that you have to devote to the project, although you can probably do a lot of the cleanup and repair on your own.

The very first thing that you need to do before you re-enter your home after a fire is to make sure that your local fire marshal says that it is safe to.  Once it is safe, turning off the electricity to your home is the next thing to do, since odds are good that the fire truck that responded to your call for help likely sprayed many, many gallons of water into your home.  This can cause an electrocution risk of you step into electrified standing water.  Remove this water after the electricity has been turned off as soon as possible.

Pets should be taken to a clean environment until the cleanup of the home is completed.  This is especially true for birds, since they are much more sensitive to environmental changes than other animals.

Plants need to be washed on both sides of their leaves to remove soot, since this soot can likely kill them.

Any food that has been opened should be thrown away, especially if it was anywhere near the fire.

The windows and doors of the home should be opened to allow ventilation.  This should help to remove the smell of smoke from the rest of the home.

Anything that needs to be vacuumed should be vacuumed carefully and without an upright vacuum that has brushes underneath it.  Brushes will only rub the soot further into the carpet and all you want to do is lift it gently off the surface.  After the soot is cleaned off the carpet and other upholstered items, put down plastic over them so you do not track soot in from other areas of the house.

Avoid sitting on upholstered furniture if you can help it.

Electronic appliances need to be cleaned and checked thoroughly.

Clean chrome, stainless steel, marble, and other materials in your home as soon as possible, since soot and ash can etch these items irreparably.

The clothing in your home should not be sent to a normal dry cleaner.  Cleaning these items improperly may set the odor and smoke further into the fabric.

Valley Fever Caused By Mold

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

In the deserts of the Southwestern United States, Mexico, and different parts of South America exists a particularly nasty variety of mold that can cause an extremely serious skin disease.  This is Coccidioides immitis and if left untreated, it can turn fatal.

Coccidioidomycosis (or Valley Fever) is caused by inhaling the spores of C. immitis.  The clinical features of this disease (when there are any symptoms at all) usually include rashes, headaches, coughing, fever, and myalgia.  Myalgia is another name for “muscle pain” and this can be the cause of many different disorders and diseases.  The most frequent cause of this is the extensive use of a certain muscle or a set of muscles.  If the patient does not have a history of accidents, then it is probably due to a viral or a bacterial infection.  If it is a long term symptom, then it could be a symptom of some kind of nutritional deficiency.

One of the most common causes of the inhalation of the C. immitis spores is the disturbance of contaminated, dusty soil.  This can be due to either a person exposing themselves to the soil while in the process of work, recreation, or as a result of a natural disaster such as an earthquake or a dust storm.  The states where the disease is known to be endemic are California, Arizona, and New Mexico.

The incidence of this disease in the year 1995 in Arizona was 15 infections per 100,000 people.

Those at risk for this disease are those who work in areas where the disease is endemic and do work that exposes them to contaminated dust and soil, which are construction workers, archeologists, or any kind of agricultural worker.  Pregnant women that are in their third trimester, Asians, African Americans, and anyone who has a weakened immune system are also particularly at risk to contract this disease.

Some people who contract this disease do not recover and this can bring on chronic pulmonary infection or even a disseminated infection that can be located all over the body.  If not treated or a person with HIV or AIDs does not recover completely from this disease, severe pulmonary disease may surface.

In 2001, a group of archeologists who had been working at a dig in Utah developed the disease within about two weeks of being exposed to the contaminated soil.  Since then, there has been a new regulation put into place requiring the watering of the soil before digging can begin and for the use of breathing mask.

Molds Affect Citrus Crops

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

Blue and green mold are two of the most important post-harvest diseases that can affect a citrus crop. The infection that occurs the most frequently is green mold and it is caused by the mold Penicillium digitatum. It exists in all citrus fruit growing regions and is a serious threat to the citrus industry.

When the fruit is bruised or punctured while it is being harvested or packed, the mold enters the fruit through these wounds and therefore, this disease can be contracted by fruit on the tree, in the packinghouse where the fruit is prepared for the market, while in transit to the store, in storage, and the retail store. At first, only a white mold is seen growing on the outside of the fruit and later begins to turn green due to the large amount of spores that are being produced on the surface of the fruit. The fruit begins to decay and become soft. It shrivels up and dies as a result.

Blue mold is caused by the fungus Penicillium italicum and it is different from green mold mainly because of the color. The conditions that the two molds grow in are very similar and tend to grow best at around 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Their growth is slowed by lowering the temperature and cooling fruits while they are being stored and shipped are a good way to decrease the amount of infections in a shipment. Losses from these molds can also be greatly reduced by taking special care during harvesting and transporting not to bruise or break the skin of the fruits. Fruits mainly become infected when their outer skin is broken and mold spores make their way inside either from contaminated soil, another infected fruit, or through the air. Fungicides can also be used to reduce the amount of infections. Also, any equipment used to pack the fruit and anywhere they are stored should be sanitized every day to reduce the chance of the fruit becoming infected.

The spores of both of these molds are very easily spread by air currents and any fruits that are contaminated with them should not be exposed to wind or other currents of air near any healthy fruit due to the likelihood of it becoming infected. Fruits can also become infected due to other physical injuries such as those associated with stem-end rind breakdown and chilling injuries.

Sleak is sexy in some new remodels

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

At last month’s Kitchen Design Expo 2008 in Chicago, there was a lot of the same old to be found in the hundreds of vendor booths that aimed at enticing contractors and those looking to remodel into using new products or building methods to create a more attractive looking kitchen.

Concrete flooring and counter top, a perennial favorite, continued as a darling as new vendors offered variations on the classic – variations that are said to resist staining, and other still that are said to be soft enough not to dull a blade yet also, somehow, hard enough to resist the slice of an edge. Sleek appliances, including a new line of induction, infrared, and convection appliances out by Electrolux continued the trend towards sleeker lines and less visible appliances.

But both of these trends underscore a broader trend towards the mimicking of Italian kitchen design principles, that aim to promote clean lines, sports-car coloration, and functionality. The result is a kitchen design that makes the kitchen a pleasure to work in, whether in a huge Brooklyn brownstone or a small NYC apartment. Italian kitchen design is gaining popularity not only because of its aesthetic, but also because of its functionality. Indeed, the area has benefited enormously from increased competition over the years as there were at least 3 dozen NY kitchen design companies at the Expo offering their contributions – from faux Italian marble to trademarked Ferrari-colored cabinet facing and hardware.

This, in my view, is a new trend that has emerged from a certain boredom about the older trend, which has been to maximize functionality. Italian kitchen design continues the emphasis on functionality at the intersection with an emphasis on art.

Guitar Wiring Diagrams, Stock and Custom

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

We’ve put together lists of all the parts and wiring diagrams you need to change the wiring or simply renew old wiring into convenient to use packs. Each kit includes it’s own wiring diagram and parts list to tell you just how to do it.

Special Notes:Child wiring his dad’s guitar!

Rewiring an old guitar using the stock wiring diagram can be very frustrating.  Wiring diagrams, whether stock or for a custom upgrade are mostly hard to find, and in many cases hard to comprehend, thus making them unlikely to work well.

Every diagram and part we list is fully tested many times to insure you get the vibe you want. Not only that, every component is designed to give outstanding life and the best tone that you have ever experienced.

The guitar wiring kit shown here is a 5-way lever action switch for all 3 pickup Fender Stratocaster’s, and other 3 pickup guitars. The kit has very detailed directions that are very well explained so most people will understand them with no problems.

Realistically speaking, so many people have their own personal wiring setups and parts they may interchange that GuitarPlayersCenter only feels comfy dealing in proven setups. In fact one of my personal fav’s is a  setup that includes an EMG-SPC control knob being installed in a Stratocaster. What a great switch,  at least in my opinion. I get the best service and prices from Guitar Center or Musicians Friend.

Don’t make a mistake, if you are not inclined to doing these upgrades, then take it to a competent luthier/guitar maker.

Remember to use a solder gun with a replaceable tip , top line solder and flux and don’t get the switches too hot.

Go to Guitar Players Center for all of your guitar needs from upgrades, lessons, reviewing certain models to purchasing them with the best prices and service in the industry.

Good luck and Enjoy.
